Artificial Eye Manufacturing Process
A guide on how our Ocularists make prosthetic eyes for our patients.

A quick guide on how we make your artificial eye

The trained Ocularists at Melbourne Artificial Eyes' laboratory have made a simple guide to explain the process and how we make artificial and prosthetic eyes. During the fitting and manufacturing process, our ocularist can answer any questions and information our patients need and each visit is a very collaborative process.

Ocularists are trained professionals who specialize in creating and fitting custom-made prosthetic eyes. The process of making a prosthetic eye is highly skilled and requires a great deal of artistic talent and attention to detail.

The first step in the process is to take a detailed impression of the patient's eye socket. This is typically done using a molding material that is carefully applied to the socket and allowed to set. The resulting mold is then used to create a custom-fitted prosthetic eye.

Once the mold has been created, the ocularist will select the appropriate material for the prosthetic eye. This is typically a type of acrylic that is both lightweight and durable. The ocularist will then carefully hand-paint the prosthetic eye to match the color and appearance of the patient's natural eye.

After the prosthetic eye has been painted, it is carefully polished and finished to give it a realistic and lifelike appearance. The ocularist will then fit the prosthetic eye to the patient, making any necessary adjustments to ensure a comfortable and natural fit.

The entire process of making a prosthetic eye can take several weeks to complete, as each step requires a high level of skill and attention to detail. However, the end result is a custom-made prosthetic eye that looks and feels natural, allowing the patient to regain their confidence and enjoy a better quality of life.
